TOEFL Score

Since January 21, 2026, the TOEFL iBT has transitioned to

1.0 to 6.0 band scale. This system replaces the traditional 0–120 total score to align more directly with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) standards.

New Scoring Mechanics (Post-Jan 21, 2026)

  • Section Scores: Each of the four sections-Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing-receives a score from 1.0 to 6.0 in 0.5 increments.
  • Overall Score Calculation: Your total band score is the average of your four section scores, rounded to the nearest half band.
    • Example: An average of 5.25 rounds up to 5.5, while an average of 5.125 rounds down to 5.0.
  • Score Release: Official scores are now available faster, typically within 72 hours (3 days) after the test date. ETS | Global education and talent solutions +5

Dual Reporting & Conversion (2026-2028)

During a two-year transition period, ETS provides three key metrics on every score report to assist universities: ETS | Global education and talent solutions +1

1. New 1–6 Band Score

2. CEFR Level (e.g., C1, B2)

3. Comparable 0-120 Score (for reference against older requirements)

New Band (1–6) CEFR Level Traditional Equivalent (Approx.)
6.0 C2 (Mastery) 114–120
5.5 C1 (Advanced) 107–113
5.0 C1 (Advanced) 95–106
4.5 B2 (Upper-Intermediate) 86–94
