Aspiring Overseas Students must beware of false University rankings even as a startling revelation has been made by the New York Times. It has been revealed that the US Temple University had fabricated data for several years to the US News & World Report. This was with the intention to boost rankings of 7 of its Master’s programs at its Fox School of Business.
The online MBA of the Temple University was ranked at the number 1 position for 4 consecutive years. This has been reported by the Philly.com.
It has been confirmed by an investigation that students have been intentionally deceived regarding the apparent prestige of their program. Thus, it is likely that the value of their qualification has declined now significantly, as quoted by the Study International.
Over the years, University Rankings have been receiving a fair share of flak. This is chiefly for trying hard and failing to quantify a subjective aspect such as tertiary education quality. Heavy criticism has been particularly meted out to the College Rankings by the US News.
New York Times’ Frank Bruni has said that parents and students must not be carried away by University League Tables. The rankings nourish the myth that selective and affluent colleges have a hold on superior education. These also do inadequate justice to the specific virtues of individual campuses, adds Bruni.
The rankings nevertheless offer a semblance of useful data to aspiring overseas students. This is provided they are supplemented by other forms of data from elsewhere. It could be testimonials offered by the alumni, niche reviews etc.
The Temple University incident adds one more blow to the source of information relied upon by many overseas students. It is also pretty hard to identify these fabrications. The flaws are reported to be in the failure of the US News to verify the fabricated data by Temple.
