Yes, you can apply for the Canada Express Entry program at 50; however, the chances of getting an invitation for a PR are low. The Express Entry program assesses applications based on the following factors:

  • Age
  • Educational qualifications
  • Language proficiency
  • Work experience
  • Adaptability
  • Arranged employment

You can score a maximum of 12 points under the age factor. Applicants belonging to the age group of 20-29 years tend to receive maximum points as it is considered the ideal age to apply for the Express Entry program . The points allotted for this criterion keep decreasing with the increasing age.  As the applicant gets older, the points assigned for the age keeps lowering. However, the overall CRS score is not solely dependent on age and includes other selection criteria like educational qualification, language proficiency, and work experience. So, applying for the Express Entry program at the age of 50 is still a possibility, provided you score higher points in the other selection factors.

What are the maximum points you can score for the Age Factor?

You can score 100-110 points under the Age factor. A maximum of 100 points can be given if you have a common-law partner or spouse accompanying you, and 110 points would be given if you are applying without a common-law partner or spouse.

You can refer to the table below to get a better understanding of the distribution of points under the age criteria:

Tips to increase your CRS score if you are above 50

While applicants aged 50 may not receive points under the age factor, there are other ways to get a good CRS score and qualify for Canada PR.

Here’s how you can maximize your CRS score if you are looking to apply at the age of 50:

Obtain a provincial nomination: You can add more points to your overall score by acquiring a provincial nomination from any Express Entry-aligned Canada PNP stream. You can score a maximum of 600 points for having a provincial nomination.

Acquire an employment offer in Canada: You can get more points if you have a valid job offer from a Canadian employer. However, you must submit complete details of the job, including payroll, job requirements, roles and responsibilities, and other employment-related requisites. You can get up to 50-200 additional points with a verified job offer.

Work experience: Additional work experience can add more points to your overall score.

Improve your language proficiency scores: You can get a maximum of 128-136 points for the language ability factor. Since this factor has many scoring sections, improving your overall CRS score by gaining maximum points under language proficiency is easier.

Scoring additional educational qualifications: You can get up to 200-250 points on the grid depending on where you have completed your academic qualifications (inside Canada or outside the country). Getting an additional degree or an ECA can positively impact your CRS score.

Have your spouse apply as the primary applicant:  In situations where the spouse or common-law partner of the Express Entry applicant has a better CRS score, it is advised to make them the primary applicant for a higher CRS score.
