Can I get ILR without taking the Life in the UK test?

No, you cannot get an Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) without the Life in the UK test. Applicants between 18 and 65 must take the test, as it is a major criterion for an ILR. The Life in the UK test evaluates the applicant’s knowledge of British traditions, customs, political system, and the country’s laws. It is a primary requirement for those seeking an ILR in the UK. To qualify for an ILR, you must have cleared the Life in the UK test. There are, however, certain conditions under which you may be exempted from the test.

What is the Life in the UK test?

The Life in the UK test is a series of short questions about British traditions, life, and customs that ILR applicants must take. It is a 45-minute test with 24 multiple-choice questions that involve British topics, including politics and traditions.  A minimum of 75% is required to clear the test and qualify for an Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR). You can schedule the test online but must attend it at the nearest local center in the UK. The test costs around £50, which must be paid while scheduling the test. You will need a valid email address, debit or credit card, and ID proof.

 

To attend the Life in the UK test, you must submit certain documents to prove your identity. Here is a checklist of documents required for the test:

 

  • Passport
  • Travel documents
  • Immigration status document
  • Biometric Residence Permit

 

Note: Applicants with a disability are also required to take the test. They can, however, request the authorities for special assistance during the test.

Who is exempt from taking the Life in the UK Test?

There are certain conditions under which you may be exempt from the Life in the UK test. You need not take the test if you are:

 

  • Below 18 years of age
  • Above 65 years of age
  • Have already cleared the test before (For those who plan on becoming a citizen but have already cleared the test as a part of the settlement application)
  • Have an ongoing mental or physical condition (Exemption form or a confirmation letter from your registered doctors)
