Outlook for Canada immigration in 2022

The government of Canada has been encouraging more than 220,000 migrants per year into its boundaries from the year 2001. In 2022, it has set its goals to invite 432,000 immigrants into the country. In the year 2023, Canada is looking to allow 445,000 immigrants. Targeting immigrants through economic programs

The economic class programs include the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), Canadian Experience Class, Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP), Self-Employed Persons, and the Start-up Visa programs. They are in line with the tradition of Canada prioritizing skilled migrants and their families. Moreover, it is planning to entice entrepreneurs to set up their businesses or expand the existing ones in Canada.

Precedence to family sponsorship programs

Canadian permanent residents (PRs) and citizens are allowed to sponsor their spouses or partners in addition to dependent children to migrate to Canada. It has reserved 105,000 places under the new immigration plan for family sponsorship to reunite families.   The government of Canada has also upped the numbers it will sponsor through the Parent and Grandparent Program (PGP). Under PGP, the country is planning to allow 25,000 immigrants per year until 2023.

Plans to invite more refugees and asylum seekers

In 2022, Canada had announced plans to welcome 80,000 refugees and asylum seekers per year until 2023, a commendable move by the country.   In addition, following the outbreak of war between Russia and Ukraine, Canada has gone on record to state that it has introduced measures to help citizens and permanent residents of Canada return home and extended an invitation to Ukrainians to enter and reside in Canada. It has also extended a similar invitation to Afghan citizens following the country's takeover by the Taliban.

On March 17, 2022, the Honorable Sean Fraser, Canada's Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced the Canada-Ukraine authorization for emergency travel (CUAET) launch. CUAET is a special, fast-tracked temporary residence route for the citizens of Ukraine who want to seek shelter in Canada until the war continues in their homeland.   Fraser added that the CUAET would allow natives of Ukraine and their immediate relations to take refuge as temporary residents in Canada for a period of up to 3 years. They could also apply for an open work permit of three years even as they apply for their visas.
