Canadians will need ETIAS to visit Europe from 2021

Canadians will require the ETIAS to visit Europe from January 2021 for purposes of business and tourism. Currently, Canadian nationals enjoy the privilege of arriving in Europe with just a valid passport. Nevertheless, they will soon have to apply for a travel pass online. This is to enter any of the 26 nations in the Schengen Zone.

The travel pass is ETIAS - European Travel Information and Authorization System. This is a fully digital scheme aimed at tracking visitors from 60 plus EU Visa-free nations.

The proposal for launching ETIAS was first unveiled in 2016. The then European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said that ETIAS is a means to know those who travel to Europe. This is even prior to their arrival, he added.

Many online media have been misled by a website recently. It has claimed that the ETIAS is a Visa. The website thus reported that Canadians and nationals of Australia and the US will need Visas from 2021.

Nevertheless, such reports are false. This has been pointed out by the EU itself in a press release. It has said that the authorization ETIAS is not a Visa. But it is a more visitor-friendly and lighter regime, as quoted by the Schengen Visa Info.

Citizens of Visa liberalized nations will still be able to arrive at the EU without Visa. However, they will require a simple authorization for their travel. This is prior to their arrival to the Schengen Area.

ETIAS will assist in identifying individuals who pose irregular security or immigration risk prior to their arrival at the EU border. It will considerably increase the security at the external borders of the EU.

The ETIAS application process is quick and simple. It is approximated that the application will take about 10 minutes for completion. The cost is 7 Euros and is no more intricate than the ETA of Canada.
