What is an RSA Certificate?

An RSA (Responsible Service of Alcohol) certificate in Australia is a legal document that authorizes individuals employed in the hospitality sector to serve or sell alcohol legally. It proves that the person is qualified, fully trained, and knows how to sell or service alcohol. Places or venues that serve alcohol must have an RSA certificate to operate their establishments legally in permissible areas in Australia. To obtain the RSA certificate, one must undergo the RSA course, which is a training program for those who sell, service, or provide alcohol in authorized places.

Who needs an RSA Certificate in Australia?

An RSA certificate is mandatory for individuals who sell, serve, or offer alcohol in licensed and authorized places. While there are not many restrictions on who can take the RSA training, it is suggested that the individual be at least 18 years of age. Those at the age of 16 can also attend the RSA training. However, they would have to wait until they turn 18 to start serving alcohol legally.

You will require an RSA certificate if you are any of the following:

  • Service Staff at a venue that serves alcohol (waitress, bar staff, etc.)
  • Managers or licensees who are responsible for supervising and managing the venue while ensuring compliance with Australian liquor laws
  • Promotional staff (those involved in promoting or offering alcohol)
  • Security (Those involved in overseeing alcohol consumption and customer behavior at the venue)
  • Volunteers (Those responsible for assisting services at the registered venues)
  • Other staff (those involved in selling and supplying alcohol to liquor outlets and stores)
