Impersonating another for fulfilling desire to fly to Canada for better job opportunities led an individual to be arrested by immigration officials. The individual was headed to Toronto in Canada.
Mehtab Singh, belonging to the Rampur District of Uttar Pradesh, was found to be travelling on the passport and Canada student visa of someone else. The person being impersonated by Mehtab Singh was one Aaditya Singh, from Udham Singh Nagar, Uttarakhand.
The incident occurred in the intervening night of September 17-18, 2020. Mehtab Singh, intercepted at Terminal 3 of the Indira Gandhi International Terminal at New Delhi, was handed over the police.
Immigration officials caught Mehtab Singh on suspicion of impersonation. The individual’s activities were found to be suspicious during the course of the routine checking.
As per reports, during cross-checking, there was found to be a mismatch between the appearance of the individual and the photo affixed on the original passport as shown by him.
While appearing to be similar to the person in the photo on the passport, the imposter was caught when the immigration officials asked him to remove his face mask. Caught on the ground of suspicion, Mehtab was subsequently handed over to the police.
The police took him into a 2-day remand for the purposes of carrying out further investigations.

On being confronted with the passport as well as other documents, the individual disclosed his real identity as Mehtab Singh, claiming that he intended going to Canada for work abroad instead.
Further, Singh disclosed that his fake documents for study abroad in Canada had been sourced by an agent named Balwant Singh.
As per a deal struck between them, Balwant Singh was to arrange an original passport and student visa for Mehtab in the name of Aaditya Singh, sending him to Canada illegally.
Mehtab Singh was to transfer INR 20 lakhs to Balwant Singh on landing in Canada.
Further investigations are underway. Other documents being carried by Mehtab Singh have also been seized by the police.
