As per a recent update, Pearson will be shortening the PTE Academic Test. An online version of the PTE Test is to be launched as well. The announcement is expected to benefit both institutions as well as test-takers. Here, PTE stands for Pearson Test of English.
Effective November 16, 2021, PTE test will be reduced in duration to 2 hours, from the existing 3 hours.  From November 16, 2021, Pearson will be launching PTE Academic Online. Exactly the same test as PTE Academic, PTE Academic Online test will be a new “online proctored option” for those preferring to sit the test remotely, that is, from the comfort of their homes. A reliable internet connection, a computer with a webcam, and a quiet location for taking the test will be required by those intending to take the PTE Academic Online. Do note that PTE Academic Online test is currently not valid for visa or migration purposes. While students intending to study abroad might opt for PTE Academic Online test, before booking the test, they are advised to first confirm whether the universities they are applying to will be accepting the online version.
PTE is one of the standardized tests for assessing the proficiency of an individual in the English language. Each year, many individuals globally trust PTE to help them gauge their English proficiency for the purposes of study abroad, work overseas, or migrate overseas. Offering “fast, accurate, objective results”, the PTE Academic test is a completely computer-based test. Moreover, Pearson allows the test taker to send their scores as often as they might prefer, for free. While PTE Academic test will be reduced in duration from November 16, 2021, there is no change in the overall test format, types of questions asked, or the scoring scale. All that is to be changed in the test is a reduction in the total number of questions to be put to the test taker. From the existing 70 to 82 questions that are usually put to the test taker, the new reduced PTE test will have from 53 to 64 questions. All 4 language skills will still be assessed. The test report will be made more streamlined. Enabling Skills will be removed from the score report and replaced with a separate skills profile.
The shorter PTE Academic test will still be accepted by the professional bodies and universities worldwide. 3,000+ academic institutions across the world accept PTE scores.  PTE Academic tests are also accepted by the governments of New Zealand, Australia, and the U.K. for visa and immigration purposes. There are 36 PTE test centres in India.
According to Freya Thomas, Senior Vice President, English Language Learning, Pearson, "Many of our PTE Academic test takers want to move abroad to study at university or progress their careers. To help them in their journey we have rolled out a shorter PTE Academic test to be taken in test centers and a new online PTE Academic test which can be taken at home."
