The TOEFL scoring pattern offers 30 marks per section for the test with 4 parts. The total score is 120 with 30 points each for writing, speaking, listening, and reading.
So, what is the ideal score for aspiring overseas students to the US?
The US News has revealed that the answer lay with the US Universities themselves. Experts have said that a range of scores can be considered as good for TOEFL. The requirements of different US Universities are diverse. Nevertheless, generally, the scores that are considered ideal range between 60 to 90 points.
The average minimum TOEFL score for overseas undergraduate applicants for highly ranked US schools with research emphasis was 78.1. This was for the academic year 2016-17. It increased to 82.5 for national liberal arts colleges in the US.
Experts in the US are of the view that overseas students who apply for select institutions must aim for around a score of 100. Around 50% of the Ivy League Schools mandated a minimum of 100 scores for the academic year 2016-17.
