QS World University Rankings 2022 are out. Recently revealed, the latest global rankings by QS are the first among the 2022 cycle of rankings for the Higher Education Report.

As per Anton John Crace, Editor, QS Quacquarelli Symonds, “the accelerating rate of change, in which the short-term forecast for higher education can shift from day to day, has meant adaptations to current research and pedagogy have had to be adapted again, and again, and again.”

In the present edition of the Higher Education Report, QS explores how institutions and education providers are setting as well as re-setting –

  • the way that programmes are delivered by them,
  • what has been learnt along the way,
  • what has undergone a change,
  • how have the changes come about, and
  • where they perceive things to be going in the future.

The COVID-19 pandemic seems to have led to an increased interest in Creative Arts programmes, as students explore their individual interests and passions due to personal interaction being limited.

Certain industry experts are of the opinion that Creative Arts areas such as Creativity and Design Thinking might also become central to a post-pandemic recovery.

The QS World University Rankings 2022 is the biggest ever World University Ranking – featuring more global universities, more comparative data, and more survey responses.

With 1,300 intuitions in this year’s rankings and a “truly global coverage”, in the QS World University Rankings 2022 students have an invaluable resource for guiding them to choose the best university in the world for themselves.

As per QS, “This year, perhaps more than ever, students will look carefully at which university to attend, and with some countries recovering from COVID-19 at different rates than others, old perceptions may find themselves challenged by necessity.”

While the QS World University Rankings have been published since 2004, there have been many refinements over the years for providing even stronger results.

How does the QS rank an educational institution?

The methodology used by QS for ranking purposes assess the factors of –

  • Academic Reputation, established through an annual survey. Responses from 130,000 academics were recorded for the 2022 rankings. Weightage given to factor – 40%.
  • Faculty to Student ratio, the number of academic staff per the number of students at the institution. A higher number of academics per student is an indirect indicator of the institution's commitment towards high-quality teaching. Weightage given to factor – 20%.
  • Citations per Faculty. Average number of citations secured per faculty member, providing an estimate of the quality as well as impact of the scientific work produced by the universities. Self-citations are not included. Weightage given to factor – 20%.
  • Employer Reputation, that is, views of employers internationally on the institutions providing the best professionals. For 2022, responses from 75,000+ employers were analysed. Weightage given to factor – 10%.
  • International Faculty. Based on the proportion of international faculty members, the International Faculty Index is a proxy measure for assessing as to how attractive the institution is to academic staff. Weightage given to factor – 5%.
  • International Students. This factor assesses as to how attractive is the institution to international students. Weightage given to factor – 5%.

QS seeks to provide a reliable tool that can be utilized by students, researchers, policymakers, educators and sector leaders for benchmarking and comparing global institutions across higher education.

As per QS, “Institutions at the top of their fields are, of course, tackling the big research issues of our time. COVID-19 and immunology, cancer research, obesity, Brexit and the effect on financial markets”.

Global institutions that made it to the top of the QS World University Rankings 2022 were those with “multi-disciplinary approaches to solving these issues”.
