Updated October 17 2024

An EU Blue Card and a Red-White-Red Card are a combined residence and work permit for third-country nationals. An EU Blue Card allows non-EU academics to live and work in their selective EU member state country. Austria's Red-White-Red Card is a similar type of permit offering residence and employment benefits, where applicants can live and work in Austria for a maximum of 2 years. Skilled foreign workers in shortage occupations, workers with high qualifications, key workers, graduates, self-employed key workers, start-up founders, and workers in the agriculture and tourism sector can apply for Austria's Red-White-Red-Card. While an EU Blue Card is more flexible, allowing non-EU citizens to work in any of the eligible EU member state countries, a Red-White-Red-Card limits their access to only work in Austria.
