How does visa sponsorship work in the UK?

Employers in the UK who have a valid sponsor license can hire foreign workers and sponsor them to migrate to the UK. The employer issues a certificate of sponsorship with a unique number, which the foreign worker must use while applying for a UK work visa.

The following are the sponsored work visas in the UK:

  • UK Skilled Worker Visa: Employers sponsor this visa to highly skilled overseas workers willing to work in the UK. Eligible visa holders who have been legal residents in the UK for five years can even apply for an Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR).

What is the UK ILR?

  • Senior or Specialist Worker Visa: This visa is sponsored by existing employees of an organization with a UK branch. With this, you can migrate, work, and stay in the UK for the period mentioned on your certificate of sponsorship, along with an additional 14 days.
  • Minister of Religion Visa: This visa is sponsored by religious workers who have a job offer in the UK. With this visa, you can live and work in the UK for up to 3 years.
  • International Sportsperson visa: This visa is sponsored by international sportspersons recruited by a sports governing body in the UK.
  • Creative Worker Visa: This visa is sponsored for creative workers employed in any job role in the creative industry. With this visa, you can stay and work in the UK for up to 3 months.
  • International Agreement Visa: This visa is sponsored for temporary workers contracted to work for an overseas government. However, the work must be related to your sponsor to be eligible for visa sponsorship or this visa.
  • Government-authorized Exchange Visa: This visa is sponsored by experienced research or fellowship scholars employed for research work in the UK.

Depending on your job role, you can get a visa sponsorship for any of the abovementioned visas. You will be notified of a visa decision within 3 to 8 weeks of your visa application.
