What is the PTE core test?

The Pearson Test of English (PTE) is an English language proficiency test taken by candidates willing to study or migrate to a major English-speaking country. The PTE core test is the latest addition to the English language test accepted by the Canadian Government for Canada Permanent Residency applicants.

Initially known as PTE Essential, the PTE core test is an online computer-based test that assesses your fluency in real-life communication. The PTE core test is crucial for Canada PR applicants from non-English speaking countries. A good PTE core test score significantly increases your chances of getting Canada PR easily.

How long does the test take?

The PTE core test is a 2-hour language proficiency test that uses an AI-based scoring system to assess the candidate's English language proficiency. The test can be taken only at a test centre, covering listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.

The maximum time allotted to a candidate taking the test is 2 hours and 15 minutes. The speaking and writing skills are allotted 60 minutes, reading skills take 30 minutes, and listening skills are given 30 minutes to complete.

How can I prepare for the PTE Core Test?

The PTE Core test tries to assess your communication skills in real-life situations. You can prepare for PTE core tests by utilizing the official resources available on the Pearson website, such as free online courses, test tips guides, and practice tests.

You can start your preparation by understanding the type of questions asked and practising them regularly. You can also get a PTE core handbook containing complete information on how to book your test, preparation tips, guidance about what happens on the exam, and more.

What happens on the test day?

On the day of your PTE Core Exam, you are expected to reach the test centre at least half an hour before your test starts. On arrival, you will be meeting a PTE Test Center Administrator who will take you through the check-in process and would want the following documents to verify your identity:

  • Your national identity proof
  • A recent digital photograph
  • Your digital signature (to be arranged by the test centre)
  • Scanned copy of your palm (to be arranged by the test centre)

After completing the verification process, you will be allotted a safe place to leave your belongings while taking the test. A test centre administrator will then take you to a partitioned booth where you will be assigned a computer, audio headset, notepad and pencil. You will have two hours to complete your PTE Core test starting from the time mentioned in your application form.

How is the test scored?

The PTE Core Test uses state–of–the–art technology to ensure unbiased and accurate scores for every one. This technology guarantees that no human examiners are involved, which helps eliminate the risk of human bias and allows you to feel confident that only your language proficiency is being assessed regardless of all other factors.

The PTE core test has 19 types of questions, and you can get a maximum score of 90 points. Scores are graded against the Global Scale of English (GSE), and the scorecard contains individual scores obtained for speaking, listening, reading and writing. While the scores for MCQ-type questions are based on accuracy, answers for subjective questions are scored based on the quality of responses.

What is the format of the PTE Core test?

The PTE Core test asses your English speaking, writing, reading and writing proficiency. The test has three parts: Part 1 consists of speaking and writing, Part 2 is reading, and Part 3 is listening. The speaking and writing part will contain seven types of questions, and you will be allotted around 50 minutes to complete this section.

The second part, consisting of reading skills, contains five types of questions, and you will be given around 30 minutes to complete the same. The third part of the test is also 30 minutes long and contains seven different types of questions. These questions will assess your listening skills, and you will be given an audio or video clip to listen to.

How often can I take the PTE Core test?

The PTE core tests are held regularly within a year, and candidates can take them as often as they want. There are no limits on the maximum number of times you can take the PTE core test; therefore, you can take it every time it is held. 

What is the passing score for the PTE Core Test?

There is no minimum passing score for the PTE Core Test. You can get a PTE core test score ranging from 10 to 90 points. While the maximum score can be obtained is 90 points, a score between 60-70 points is a good score to make you eligible to apply for Canada PR or Canadian Citizenship.

Can I retake the PTE core test if I am not satisfied?

If you are not satisfied with your PTE core test score, you can retake the exam after 5 days from the date your results get published. You will be eligible to retake the PTE core test only after the results of your previous exam have been published.

There are no limits on the maximum number of times you can take the PTE core test, and you can appear for the test as many times as you like. However, you can only register for one exam at a time, and to reappear for the next exam, you have to wait for the results of the previous one.  

What should I bring with me on the test day?

On the exam day, you must show certain documents such as a valid ID proof, your passport and recent digital photographs. You will be provided with a notepad and pencil for taking notes. Some test centres may also provide you with water bottles during the exam.

You are advised not to bring any writing items or water bottles because you will not be allowed to sit with them during the exam. The test centre will allot a dedicated space to leave all your belongings for the duration of the exam; therefore, it is advised to carry the least things possible.
