1,800 Indian chefs and yoga instructors will be allowed to live, work and stay for up to 4 years in Australia under the India-Australia Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA). The agreement came into effect on Thursday, March 30.
The stay and entry will be temporary, and they will enter the country as Contractual Service Suppliers of India. One must meet relevant eligibility criteria to enter Australia under this agreement.

The agreement is expected to magnify India’s bilateral trade with Australia. The trade value between the two countries is $31 billion, expected to reach over $45-50 billion in the next five years.
The Indian goods on all tariff lines will access the Australian market at zero customs duty under the pact. As per the estimations of the Federation of Indian Export Organisations, Indian exports to Australia to reach $15 billion by 2025, while the services will go up to US$ 10 billion by 2025.
The pact will also benefit more than 1 lakh Indian students from the post-study work visas for up to 4 years on a reciprocal basis.

The agreement is also expected to recognize professional qualifications and other licensed/regulated occupations mutually. With this, a Mutual Recognition Agreement in nursing, architecture, and other professional services between the professional bodies of India and Australia will assist in moving professionals into each other’s territory.
The country will also be allowing at least 1,000 young Indians between 18 and 30 years old. These young Indians will work while on holiday for a year through a Work & Holiday visa, also known as a backpacker visa.
