By the “186 ENS visa of Australia” is implied the Employer Nomination Scheme visa [subclass 186].
The subclass 186 Australian permanent residence visa is for skilled workers that have secured a nomination by their employers to work as well as live in Australia on a permanent basis.
As part of the basic eligibility required for the visa, the foreign skilled worker must possess the required skills for the job and also have a nomination by an employer in Australia.
Moreover, the skilled worker will be required to meet the health and character requirements as laid down by the Department of Home Affairs.
There are 3 separate streams that come under the subclass 186 visa of Australia. These are –
Stream | Requirements |
Direct Entry |
Nomination by an Australian employer. Occupation of the worker must be on list of eligible skilled occupations. Language requirement is a minimum of competency in English. The individual must be formally qualified in their occupation and have worked for a minimum of 3 years at a skilled level in their occupation. |
Labour agreement |
Employer required to have a labour agreement. Those already working, or due to work, for employer party to a labour agreement will have to apply through this stream. |
Temporary Residence Transition [TRT] |
The individual must have worked for employer full-time for a minimum of 3 years. The work done by them in the past must have been in the same occupation with the nominating employer that wants to offer them a permanent position in that occupation. They must hold a Temporary Work [Skilled] visa [subclass 457], Temporary Skilled Shortage [TSS] visa or a related bridging visa A, B, or C. |
Applying for the subclass 186 visa involves a 2-step process – a nomination by an approved Australian employer, and a visa application by the skilled overseas worker.
An individual can be either in Australia or abroad at the time of applying. In order to be able to apply for subclass 186 visa from within Australia, the applicant would be required to be in the country either on a valid visa or a bridging visa A, B, or C.

Skill requirement | Must possess the skills for carrying out the job listed on the Skilled Occupation List. |
Work experience | At least 3 years in chosen profession or trade. A positive skills assessment might be required. |
Nomination | Must be nominated by an Australian employer though the official channels [to ensure that they are operating lawfully]. |
English requirement | In IELTS, at least Band 6 for each of the 4 components. |
Age |
Generally, must be below 45 years of age. Exemption in certain cases – researchers, scientists, academic lecturers etc. |
Occupation |
Must be on the Skilled Occupation List. The list is subject to change. Not all occupations are eligible for subclass 186. |
Other requirements | Must meet the health and character requirements. |
Note. – A visa will be denied in situations wherein the nomination is withdrawn by the Australian employer.
