Canada’s PGP witnesses growth in immigration numbers in 2023

According to the most recent data from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), 28,280 parents and grandparents have become new permanent residents of Canada through the Family sponsorship program at the end of December 2023. Furthermore, overall immigration in Canada reached a record high with 471,550 foreign nationals becoming permanent residents, marking a 7.8% increase from previous year.

Canada Immigration levels plan 2024 – 2026

According to the 2024–2026 Immigration Levels Plan in Canada, the nation plans to accept 485,000 new permanent residents in 2024, followed by 500,000 in 2025 and 2026. A total of 1.485 million immigrants will be welcomed in Canada over those three years.

Canada PGP cost and procedure

The total cost for sponsoring a parent or grandparent under the PGP is around $1,050, with an application processing time of 23 months. 

  • The individual being sponsored must then submit biometrics.
  • Invitation to Apply (ITA) is provided to Canadian citizen or permanent resident interested in sponsorship.

 

The individual is required to submit two applications to PGP:

  • Application for sponsorship
  • Permanent residency application

 

Canada PGP eligibility criteria

To be qualified as a sponsor you are required to meet eligibility criteria:

  • Receive an ITA
  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Canadian residency
  • Being a permanent resident in Canada, citizen of Canada, or an Indian registered under the Canadian Indian Act
  • Sufficient financial funds
  • Proof of income
  • Sponsors must also meet all other requirements under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and Regulations

 

Applicants may not be eligible to sponsor their parents or grandparents if they:

  • Are in jail
  • Did not pay back an performance bond or immigration loan
  • Did not make family support payments ordered by court
  • Failed to provide financial support under sponsorship agreement
  • Declared bankruptcy
  • Got social assistance for reason other than disability
  • Convicted of violent crime or any offence
  • Not legally authorized to stay in Canada

 

Sponsored applicants are usually asked to submit the following documents:

  • Medical exam results
  • Police certificates, and
  • Biometrics

IRCC informs applicants to keep their information up to date

Canadian immigration officials advise applicants to maintain current contact information and application details up to date. 

Some of the important information that is required to be updated include:

  • Changes in relationship status
  • Birth or adoption of a child
  • Demise of an applicant or dependent
  • Contact information such as e-mail addresses, phone numbers, and mailing addresses
