4 Canadian Universities have decreased Ph.D. tuition fee for overseas students and it will now be on par with local students in Canada. The University of Toronto was the first to offer this at the beginning of 2018. It announced that as of 2018 autumn, the majority of the overseas Ph.D. students will pay tuition fees on par with local students.
Western University made a similar announcement for Overseas Ph.D. students in March 2018. It was later joined by Brock University Ontario, as quoted by the Study International.
The latest amongst the Canadian Universities to decrease Ph.D. tuition fee for overseas students is the University of Ottawa. It announced this move in the website of the university.
The University of Ottawa said that it wants to ensure that overseas Ph.D. students complete their studies at lower costs. They must also benefit from the facilities of the University including research and teaching excellence, adds the University.
For full-time overseas students in Ph.D. for Arts, the tuition fees are 5, 444 CA$. Meanwhile, for the Canadian nationals, the fees is 2, 357 CA$.
Overseas students are increasingly declining to immigrate for higher studies to the UK and the US. They are choosing to Study in Canada that is far more welcoming to them.
The reduction in tuition fees for overseas students has an impact beyond the financial aspects. It symbolizes how forthcoming the nation is towards overseas students. This opinion was also reflected in the editorial of The Globe and Mail most widely read newspaper in Canada. It contended that the symbolism of the move by the Canadian universities was more important.
