44 New US Immigration Judges have been welcomed by Jeff Sessions the Attorney General in the US. The Justice Department has said that this is the biggest class of immigration judges in the nation’s history.
The new US Immigration Judges were welcomed even as the Trump government is struggling to join up families at the border that are separated. This is after its policy of zero tolerance, as quoted by the VOA News. It had resulted in a record number of immigration cases in the offing for the hearing.
400 children are still separated from their families owing to the decision to keep the kids in custody separately as the parents await the trial. This has been revealed by a US court filing. The court had also mandated that the government must reunite these families with the kids within 45 days.
The US currently has a backlog of 700,000 plus immigration cases. This has been revealed by the Access Clearinghouse Transactional Records. It is a research organization that collates data at Syracuse University.
The Attorney General in the US said that more new Immigration Judges will be added within the end of the calendar year. The goal is to enhance the numbers of Judges by 50% he added.
Jess Sessions applauded the increasing numbers of US immigration judges. He also cautioned them of the huge overload of work that they need to take care of.
The Justice Department has approval for funds to onboard 100 new US Immigration Judges with teams for the year 2018. The department now has 351 Immigration Judges after the latest inclusion. This is still lesser than the allocation of current budget for 384 judges.
