50% increase in Canadian Citizenship for Indians in 2018

The percentage of Indians obtaining Canadian Citizenship has increased by 50% in the period between January and October 2018. Indians residing in Canada are taking a step forward in their immigration journey. Several 1000s of them are choosing Canadian Citizenship after having resided here for a specific period as PR holders. The latest statistics have been revealed by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.

Around 15,016 Indians received the Citizenship of Canada in the 10 month period ending in October 2018. This is a steep increase of 50% in comparison with 2017, as quoted by the Times of India.

India is the second highest recipient of Canadian Citizenship in 2018 as a nation of birth.  The Filipinos topped the list by a slender lead of just 626 over India with 15, 642 of them obtaining the Canadian Citizenship. However, this was a mere 11% increase in comparison with the previous year.

Totally 1.39 lakh Canada PR holders obtained Citizenship in the period between January and October 2018. The share of Indians in this figure was around 11%. These are initial figures and the final numbers are projected to be much higher.

It has become easier to obtain Citizenship of Canada from 2017 October. The time period for which the PR holders must actually be present in Canada before submitting citizenship application has been reduced. Earlier, the requirement was to be present for 4 out of 6 years. However, a PR holder is now required to be present for 3 out of 5 years in Canada.

Citizenship of Canada offers greater benefits in comparison with PR. It includes obtaining the voting rights, eligibility to work in the government sector and enhanced mobility.
