Alberta working on introducing Rural Immigration Programs

During the recent elections, Jason Kenny, the new Premier of Alberta, had promised two new immigration programs. The Immigration Dept. of Alberta is currently working on designing the programs. The Dept. is exploring many options for the same. Consultations on the programs will begin later this year. The program will involve various stakeholders like immigrants, employers, settlement organizations and experts. Mr Kenny had promised to create the Rural Entrepreneur Immigration Program and the Rural Renewal Program. These programs would focus on revitalizing the smaller communities in Alberta. They would help bring foreign entrepreneurs and skilled professionals to the rural communities in the province. Mr Kenny said that the new programs could bring in 40,000 new Permanent Residents in 4 years to Alberta. 32,000 newcomers could come in through the Rural Renewal Program. 8,000 new immigrants could also come in via the Rural Entrepreneur Immigration Program. Rural Renewal Program The UCP wanted to model the Rural Renewal Program on programs like the Morden Community Initiative of Manitoba. 20% of all new immigrants settle in rural communities in Manitoba. Rural programs have helped the population of communities like Morden grow significantly. Mr Kenny also said that the Rural Renewal Program would be linked to the Federal Express Entry Program, as per CIC News. Rural Entrepreneur Immigration Program This program aims to bring in 500 overseas entrepreneurs every year. Eligible entrepreneurs would need to meet the net worth and the least investment levels. They should also commit to setting up and managing a business with at least 51% ownership. Entrepreneurs invited through the REIP would get a 2-year work permit. They could also apply for a provincial nomination later on. They could do so provided they meet the set conditions.
