If you have children/grandchildren in Canada who are either permanent residents or citizens in Canada, you can get sponsored by them to join them and live in Canada. This is the pathway for Canada PR under the dedicated program named Parents and Grandparents Program.

Understanding the PGP

The PGP is an immigration program that allows eligible people in Canada who are permanent residents or citizens to sponsor their parents and grandparents. They can arrive in Canada and live with their sponsors as permanent residents themselves.

Steps involved in immigration through PGP

Let’s start with where the Canadian resident decides to sponsor their parents/grandparents to immigrate to Canada. They have to submit an Interest to Sponsor form duly filled in.

Once that application is approved, the sponsor will be invited to sponsor their parents and grandparents. At this stage, there are two applications to be submitted.

• The application to become a sponsor
• The application for permanent residence that the parents and grandparents have to submit

Both these applications must be submitted online at the same time. There will be a deadline in the letter of invitation before which the applications will have to be lodged.

Here’s about these steps with some detail:

Step 1. Receive an invitation to apply

Among the potential sponsors, a certain number of them will be selected randomly to lodge applications to sponsor their parents and grandparents. For the intake in 2022, IRCC has issued 23,100 invitations. The goal was to accept up to 15,000 applications that have been filled in completely and submitted.

Step 2. Apply online

Concerning the current batch of applications for PGP, only after receiving an invitation to apply under the 2022 process do the sponsor and the sponsored person have to fill in their respective applications.

The following are the forms the sponsor has to fill in and submit:

• Sponsor’s checklist for documents
• Application to Sponsor, Undertaking, and Sponsorship Agreement Note: The sponsor, sponsor’s co-signer (in case applicable), and the person being sponsored have to put their signature on this form electronically.
• Financial evaluation for Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship
• Sources of income for the sponsorship of parents and grandparents (in case it applies).
• Statutory Declaration of Common-Law Union (in case this is applicable) Note: the applicant, the applicant's partner, and the person administering the declaration; all have to put signatures with the date on this form by hand.

The one who’s sponsored (principal applicant) has to

• upload the necessary forms while applying online
• put an electronic signature on the entire application, including for the members of their family

The following are the forms the sponsored have to fill in and submit:

• Generic application form for Canada
• Additional information on the family
• Schedule A – Background/Declaration
• Supplementary Information about the applicant’s travels

Step 3. Pay your application fees

The fees payable include:

• processing fees for the sponsor and those sponsored and their dependants
• the fee for biometrics
• the fee for the Right of Permanent Residence

Step 4. Submit the applications online

Prior to submitting the application, the applicant must be sure that

• All questions must be answered on the forms
• Include the receipt of your processing fee
• Sign your application electronically
• Upload all the supporting documents
