Apply online for work permits under Atlantic Immigration Pilot

Applications for work permits under Canada’s Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program are being accepted. From August 17, 2020, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada [IRCC] has started accepting applications for work permits under the AIP.

As per CIC News, AIP work permit applications can now be done online. The immigration department of Canada has begun accepting online applications for AIP work permits. Paper-based applications are to be accepted until September 1, 2020.

Introduced in 2017, the 3-year Pilot is to run until December 31, 2021.

A fast-track Canada immigration pathway, the Pilot offers an opportunity for employers in Atlantic Canada – Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and New Brunswick – to hire foreign nationals for filling up job vacancies that they have been unable to fill locally.

To be eligible for the Pilot, a foreign national is required to have a valid job offer in any of the 4 Atlantic provinces in Canada.

By the year 2021, more than 7,000 newcomers along with their families are expected to be welcomed to the Atlantic Canada region through the Pilot program.

The Pilot has met with much success in attracting immigrants to the targeted region of Canada. As per the federal government of Canada, the Pilot might be made into a permanent immigration program.

Prior to applying for Canada permanent immigration, a candidate will require a work permit for being able to work legally in the country.

For a work permit under the AIP, a candidate will need –

A valid job offer from an employer in either of the 4 provinces [Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and New Brunswick]

A referral letter from the relevant province

A commitment to applying for Canada PR within 90 days of their temporary work permit application

After the above-mentioned requirements are met, the candidate might then be eligible for a 1-year work permit that is employer-specific.

Under this Pilot program, the employers in Atlantic Canada are not required to complete a labour Market Impact Assessment [LMIA].

Foreign nationals will have to submit their application online for the employer-specific work permit. They cannot apply for the same at a port of entry.

After submitting their application for a temporary work permit, the foreign national will then have to apply for Canadian permanent residence in the next 90 days.
