Each year, January 26 is celebrated as Australia Day. A national holiday, the day is commemorated for the setting up of the first European Settlement in Australia – at Port Jackson, now in Sydney – in the year 1788.

It was on January 26 that the First Fleet, an 11-ship convoy carrying convicts, landed at Port Jackson. This historic event represents the founding of the colony of New South Wales.

In a survey of new migrants conducted by Australian Management and Education Services (AMES), it was found that about 68% of the newcomers had plans to mark the day in some way or the other. AMES has a significant role to play in the settlement of new arrivals in Australia. As per AMES, since 1945, more than 7 million people from about 180 countries have migrated to the Land Down Under.

150 new migrants were surveyed by AMES.

Based on the findings of the survey, Cath Scarth, AMES Australia CEO, said that refuges and migrants were indeed strongly committed to turning Australians and also looked ahead to become contributors to the nation.

According to Scarth, AMES had come to the finding that all the people who newly arrived in Australia, almost without an exception, wished to fit in, becoming a part of the broader society. Also, Scarth believes that the newcomers to Australia were interested in learning about the history and culture of the country and wanted to build their connections to Australia.

On January 26, 2020, a record number of migrants marked Australia Day by becoming citizens of Australia. Over 27,000 migrants took the pledge this year, compared to 15,137 in 2019.

Acting immigration minister, Alan Tudge, has extended congratulations to all those attending 454 ceremonies across the country to mark Australia Day celebrations.
