Generally, run on a quarterly-basis, invitation rounds are held by the Australian government for the Skilled Independent visa [subclass 189] as well as the Skilled Work Regional [Provisional] visa [subclass 491] – Family Sponsored visas.
In view of the COVID-19 pandemic situation, targeted SkillSelect invitation rounds have been held by the DHA since May 2020.
An Overview of the April 21 SkillSelect invitations
Visa Type | Total invitations |
Skilled Independent visa [subclass 189] | 500 |
Skilled Work Regional [Provisional] visa [subclass 491] – Family Sponsored | 160 |
The highest-ranked, as per their Australia eligibility calculation score, are invited to apply for the relevant visa.
If candidates have an equal points score, their date of effect will be taken into consideration.
By the date of effect is implied the specific time that they had reached their present points score for that particular subclass.
Expression of Interest [EOI] profiles created at an earlier date gain precedence over those submitted at a later date.
The minimum points scores of profiles that got invitations for subclass 189 or subclass 491 [family sponsored] visas are as follows –
Visa subclass | Minimum points
For October 21, 2020 | For January 21, 2021 | For April 21, 2021

189 | 2339 | Other Engineering Professionals | 90 |
491 | 2339 | Other Engineering Professionals | 70 |
Note. Rest of the invitations might have been issued to applicants under medical and other critical occupations.
The pro rata arrangement is for ensuring the availability of invitations throughout the program year.
What are Pro Rata Occupations?
By a “pro rata arrangement” is implied that SkillSelect will first allocate the available places to subclass 189, and thereafter to subclass 491.
If all spaces are taken up by subclass 189, no invitations will be issued for subclass 491 in that occupation.
