In an end-of-the-year Cabinet reshuffle, while the key Cabinet portfolios remain unchanged by the Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, many Ministers have had their portfolios switched.
In Finance, Mathias Cormann has been replaced by Simon Birmingham. Dan Tehan, on the other hand, has been moved into Trade.
Alex Hawke is the new Minister for Immigration, Citizenship, Migrant Services and Multicultural Affairs.
Alan Tudge, the former Immigration Minister of Australia, has been moved to Education. Tudge’s place has been taken by Alex Hawke.
In a Message for Christmas 2020, the new Minister for Immigration, Citizenship, Migrant Services and Multicultural Aff?airs Alex Hawke has stated, “It is a great privilege to be appointed Minister for Immigration, Citizenship, Migrant Services and Multicultural Affairs, particularly as the child of a migrant family that arrived in Australia seeking the safety, freedom and opportunities this country affords. Australia’s great migration story will always be an essential part of our nation’s ongoing prosperity and success.”
Going on to say that while 2020 has been “no ordinary one” for Australia, having faced drought, bushfires, flood as well as a global COVID-19 pandemic that have combined together testing the resilience of Australians, there have also been “many stories of Australians coming together to help one another”.
According to Australia’s new Immigration Minister, “Australia is one of the most successful multicultural societies in the world. Our social cohesion has never been more important than it is at this challenging time”.
Australia’s migration program has a ceiling of 160,000 for 2020-21. Of these, 79,600 are set aside for the Skill stream specifically designed for addressing the shortage in the labour market in Australia.
Allocation for the Global Talent Independent [GTI] Program has been tripled, from 5,000 in 2019-20 to 15,000 in 2020-21.
Australia remains among the Top 3 countries for immigration post COVID-19.
