Austria stops entry for Italy due to Coronavirus outbreak

Chancellor Sebastian Kurz has recently announced that Austria would ban the entry for Italians due to the Coronavirus outbreak.

Italy has been among the worst affected countries by the Coronavirus outbreak. Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has announced a total lockdown for Italy to stop the spread of the Coronavirus. The lockdown is expected to continue until the end of next month.

12,462 cases of Coronavirus infection have been detected in Italy so far. The pandemic has also caused the death of 827 people making it one of the worst-affected countries of Europe.

Chancellor Kurz announced in a meeting that the topmost priority of Austria is to stop the entry and spread of the Coronavirus. Hence, there is a blanket ban on Italians from entering Austria. The only exemptions are Italians who come with a doctor’s note certifying them healthy and infection-free.

Apart from the ban on Italy, Austria has also banned large public gatherings. Indoor events comprising of more than 100 people and outdoor events comprising of more than 500 people have been banned.

Austria has also stepped up the border checks. Italians can only enter if they have a valid medical certificate or if they have access to accommodation for 14 days of isolation. People will be allowed to travel through Austria provided there are no stops in the journey in Austria.

As a preventive measure, Austria has decided to stop University lectures. Companies have been advised to let employees work from home from Monday.

Austria has reported 209 cases of Coronavirus infection; however, no deaths have been reported so far in the country.

Austria has also announced the ban on flights to the Italian cities of Bologna and Milan. Flights to South Korea and Iran have also been banned to stop the spread of the Coronavirus.

Karl Nehammer, Interior Minister, has also announced the ban on flights and train journeys from Italy to Austria.

There have been 127,000 reported cases of Coronavirus infection all over the world. The deadly pandemic has caused the deaths of 4,717 people so far. The worst affected countries are China, which is also the epicentre, Italy and Iran.
