It is crucial to complete the necessary immigration formalities prior to entering Switzerland as an overseas student. This requires the preparation of several documents.
Switzerland Student Visa
You may have to apply for a Study Visa of Switzerland depending on the nation of your origin. It does not necessarily imply that you will receive a visa automatically if you fulfill all the conditions. Under any circumstances, the criteria of the competent Cantonal and Federal authorities must be adhered to.
After your arrival in Switzerland
After your arrival to the nation, you are required register at the Residents’ Registration Office in the where you will reside within 2 weeks. You must report to the commune even if you are residing in a temporary accommodation. This is required to commence the process for receiving a Residence Visa, as quoted by the EPFL CH.
You must remember to intimate the post office regarding your permanent address as you can receive your Visa by post. It also applies to Swiss nationals arriving from another nation. It may take some months or weeks to obtain the Residence Visa.
Occupancy tax
Students who are domiciled overseas but stay in Lausanne for purposes of Study must pay CHF 37 every month as occupancy tax. This is among the important immigration formalities.
There is an option to seek exemption from tax. This is if you benefit from an overseas or Swiss scholarship. You are also eligible if you have subsidiary earnings that have tax deducted at source.
