As more workers retire or quit the workforce in Canada, there has come about a spike in the demand for immigrants to fill up the vacancies created thereby.
With the shortage going up, the Canadian government is expected to turn to new and allegedly under-utilized sources that might help in growing the Canadian labour force.
Sources that include immigration.
Previously, while Canada had lifted the number of new permanent residents to that of pre COVID-19 levels, there has not been an impact on the population as such. The increase in number of new permanent residents in recent times has primarily only been a reflection of those already within Canada, transitioning from a temporary status in Canada to a permanent one.

However, with the Canadian border now open to more immigrants, there is great expectation that the resulting flow of newcomers into Canada will reduce the pressure on the local labour markets.
As per official estimates, around 125,000 workers in Canada are expected to retire in the second half of 2021. When added to the already existing 550,000 job vacancies in Canada in the first quarter of the year, there are endless possibilities and opportunities for foreign nationals planning to immigrate to Canada under the various economic programs. |
Launched in 2015, the Express Entry system of the federal government of Canada – managed by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada [IRCC] – is an online application management system.
The 3 main economic immigration programs of Canada come under the federal Express Entry system. These are – the Federal Skilled Worker Program [FSWP], the Federal Skilled Trades Program [FSTP], and the Canadian Experience Class [CEC].
While the Express Entry system is probably the better known, there is another comparative lesser known, but recommended, route to Canada PR through the provinces.
The Provincial Nominee Program [PNP] – also commonly referred to as Canadian PNP – offers nearly 80 different immigration pathways or ‘streams’ that can get an immigrant permanent residence in Canada.
Each of the PNP streams targets a specific class of immigrants, such as – international students, skilled workers, businesspeople etc.
Nevertheless, other options might prove to be a quick-fix solution for dealing with the gap in the Canadian labour force.
Canada’s Global Talent Stream [GTS] has 2 categories –
Category A: For individuals with “unique and specialized” talent, and
Category B: For highly-skilled workers for filling positions in select STEM or ICT in-demand occupations, as per the Global Talent Occupations List.
Alternatively, an immigrant can take the Temporary Foreign Worker Program [TFWP] route to Canada.
Canadian work permits and visa applications for the GTS and TFWP are processed within 2 weeks.
Earlier, Canada announced new open work permit for recent PR applicants.
Provided the COVID-19 cases remain low, the federal government of Canada is all set to re-open the Canadian international border for non-essential international travel on September 7, 2021.
Canada ranks #1 in COVID-19 vaccination among countries with 10+ million population. |
