Malaysia is counting on increased tourist arrivals and their expenditure for economic growth. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim recently revealed plans to enhance visa requirements, specifically targeting tourists and investors from India.
9.16 million Tourists arrived in Malaysia between January and June of this year, with 283,885 coming from India. During the period of 2019, there were 354,486 tourists from India.
In a similar move, Sri Lanka and Thailand recently declared that visas are no longer required for Indian tourists, which is effective from November 10. Indian tourists can now enter Thailand without a visa and enjoy a generous 30-day stay. This beneficial policy is scheduled to last up to May 10 of the following year, with a possibility of extension if there is a demand that continues to increase.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand highlighted that in 2022 there were 965,994 Indian tourists who visited the nation. The number of Indian tourists increased to 1,302,483 between January 1 and October 31 of this year.
In October, Sri Lanka became a part of the visa-free entrance program, extending welcome to travellers from seven nations, including India. This was initially introduced as a pilot project; the program became effective immediately and is set to continue until March 31, 2024.
This initiative aligns with Sri Lanka's goal of fostering international tourism and creating a more accessible environment for visitors.
