Permanent Residents who have a 10-year US Green Card that has expired or will expire in the next 6 months may have to apply for a renewal. They can do this by:
If you are outside the US and your Green Card expires within 6 months, you should file for renewal as soon as you return to the US. But you must be returning within 1 year of your departure from the US and before the expiry of the card.
At times you may be outside the US when the card expires and you would have not been able to apply for renewal prior to your departure. You should then contact the nearest US port of entry, USICS office or US Consulate. This is prior to attempting to file a renewal of US Green Card through Form I-90, as quoted by the USICS Gov.
You will be required to renew your card if you are a PR holder with Form I-551 with 10 years validity. The card must have either expired or has expiry date within next 6 months.
The above instructions are not applicable if you are a conditional resident and the status is expiring. You must use Form I -751, Application for Removal of Conditions on Residence. This is for removal of conditions on your status as a permanent resident.
The status of your application can be checked online through My Case Status. It must be remembered that a receipt for e-filing may not be accessible through this for 72 hours.
