Canada is all set to introduce immigration programs that will allow smaller communities in the country to pick immigrants according to their labour needs. Marco Mendicino, Immigration Minister of Canada, announced that Canada aims to bring in 1 million immigrants in the next 3 years.

However, the Canadian Govt. also announced that the program for bringing in parents and grandparents to Canada had been temporarily suspended.

The Liberal Govt. website stated that Canada’s new immigration program is designed to communities in the country greater access to skilled workers. The program will make it easier for smaller communities to bring in foreign workers to meet their skill gaps. Canada aims to bring in at least 10,000 immigrants to the country through this program.

Mr Mendicino said that under the new immigration plan communities in Canada can draw on their local experiences and expertise to understand where the labour shortages lie. The immigration plans will help these communities bring in immigrants as per the economic opportunities available.

Though Canada is yet to announce a target date for commencing the plan, it is highly probable that the plan will be set in place this year itself.

Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister, has advised Mr Mendicino to draw up plans to bring in 1 million immigrants to Canada in the next 3 years. Canada needs foreign workers to fill in vacancies that have been created by a low birth rate and an ageing population.

The Conference Board of Canada has predicted that more than 9 million Canadians would have reached retirement age by 2030.

Canada has made significant changes to its immigration programs in the past as well. It scrapped the first-come-first-served program to make way for the online Express Entry Program.

Even though the Parents and Grandparents Program in Canada has been temporarily suspended, the suspension is expected to be beneficial for the program. The time will allow the immigration department to develop a new application intake management process for implementation in 2020.

Canada brings in about 20,000 immigrants a year through the Parents and Grandparents Program.
