Alternatively, they might be able to secure a new Canada work permit under any of the temporary measures put in place by the Canadian government in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Recognizing the “potential disruption and uncertainty for applicants” that had an expiring work permit, IRCC had been working towards ensuring that those who don’t qualify for the existing measure don’t lose their temporary status and work authorization in Canada. |
As per IRCC, to qualify for this 1-time open work permit, the applicant must be able to demonstrate that they –
[1] had successfully submitted an application under any 1 of the 6 new permanent residence pathways,
[2] hold a valid work permit, or were authorized to work without a work permit, at the time that their Canada PR application was submitted to IRCC,
[3] hold a valid Canada work permit set to expire within the forthcoming 4 months,
[4] have temporary resident status in Canada, maintained status or are eligible to restore their status at the time that their Canada open work permit application was submitted,
[5] are in Canada at the time that their open work permit application was submitted,
[6] were employed in any of the occupations at the time that their permanent residence application was submitted, and
[7] meet the language-related eligibility requirements of the specific stream that they had applied under at the time of the submission of their Canada PR application.
As per Marco E. L. Mendicino, P.C., M.P., Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, “This new open work permit ensures that those who have been playing critical roles throughout the pandemic can continue their extraordinary service. Our message to them is simple: your status may be temporary, but your contributions are lasting—and we want you to stay.” |
Applications for the new work permit will have to be submitted online.
Further details are to be made available by IRCC on July 26, 2021.
Work permits issued under this policy will be valid until December 31, 2022. |
