PGWP holders can apply for a new work permit

Canada has made an announcement that the candidates whose PGWP will expire or is going to expire between September 20, 2021 and December 31, 2022, can apply for a new open work permit. Usually, PGWP is a one-and-done-deal. The holders of PGWP can get an open work permit whose validity is three years.

Due to this new measure, PGWP holders will have the right to extend their work permit whose validity will be 18 months. IRCC has made an announcement that candidates will not have the permission to apply for this new work permit from the port of entry, Candidates also need to note that the last date of submitting the application is December 31, 2022

Candidates who are residing in Canada can continue their work in the interim period while their application for the work permit is being processed or a new one is being issued.

Scenarios to be considered for PGWPs while applying for the new work permit

There are different scenarios which the applicants have to consider while applying for the new work permit. These scenarios are discussed here in detail.

Your PGWP expires between October 2, 2022 and December 31, 2022, the validity of your passport is up to April 2024 and your address is up to date

There is no need to do anything. IRCC will send you an email message and there is no need to send any response for that email. You will receive your updated work permit by mid-October.

Your PGWP expires between October 2, 2022 and December 31, 2022, but you need to update the validity of your passport and your mailing address

IRCC will send an email to you to confirm your mailing address. The email will consist of the instructions which you have to follow. You also have to inform IRCC that you are updating your mailing address.

If the validity of your passport does not permit IRCC for the extension of your work permit by 18 months, you will receive a separate email in September. This email will include the instructions regarding updating your mailing address and passport details online. Check your passport validity and if it is going to expire before April 2, 2024, apply for its extension.

Your PGWP expires between October 2, 2022 and December 31, 2022, and you won’t be able to update your mailing address or passport validity.

In this case, you have to apply online for the extension of your work permit. You have to wait to apply till your passport is renewed. Your work permit may also be extended till the expiration of your passport.

Your PGWP expires between October 2, 2022 and December 31, 2022, but IRCC has not contacted you.

If IRCC will not contact you till mid-September, you may not be eligible for the extension of your work permit due to many reasons like file consists of the required information that is to be further reviewed.

Your PGWP will be expired from September 20, 2021 to October 1, 2022

In such a case, you have to apply online for a work permit. Applications will be opened on August 2, 2022. If you are residing in Canada and your temporary status is also expired, you have to apply to restore your status. You will be allowed to restore status though the temporary status has been expired 90 days ago.
