Canadian government released a list of authorized hotels that international travellers can stay in during the mandatory three-day quarantine period. Once the travellers land at one of the four airports currently open for international flights, they have to take the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test.
They should then await the test results at one of the pre-approved hotels. All air-travellers coming back from non-essential international travel must produce a negative COVID-19 test report. The test should have been taken a maximum of 72 hours prior to boarding the flight.
In January, Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, had announced that the hotel stay (including food, stay, security, transportation, and infection prevention and control measures) would cost no more than $2,000 for three days.
Canadian press, however, reported that the stay cost is much lower. For example, Alt Hotel Pearson Airport and the Sheraton Gateway Hotel are charging $339 and $319, respectively. These charges are for a single person and include stay, food, and security.
An authorized hotel at Calgary International Airport, the three-day package includes stay, food, and $75 worth security and comes to around $1,272 plus taxes.
Currently, Canada has restricted international flights, flying in and out of the country, to land at only four airports - Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, or Montreal. Passengers with negative results on their arrival PCR tests can take connecting flights to their final destination city.
The government-authorized list of hotels at the four airports are listed below:
Calgary International Airport (YYC)
Vancouver International Airport (YVR)
Toronto Pearson Airport (YYZ)
Montréal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport (YUL)
Given the pricey hotel stay, a few Canadians staying abroad are reluctant to fly back. They say, if required, we will take alternate routes to get back home. Instead of air, Canadians don’t mind crossing the border by land.
Patty Hajdu, Canadian Health Minister, reiterated the importance of strict travel measures. These measures would help curb fresh COVID-19 cases. The health officials will be able to understand the virusbetter.
American Express Global Business Travel (multinational travel company) is managing all hotel bookings.Travellers can call these numbers to book their stay.
They can make special requests and address any accessibility concernswhile booking their rooms.
Once the passengers receive their test results, they can check-out of their hotel and carry out the rest of the 14-day quarantine period in their home. During the last few days of their quarantine, they will have to repeat the test. Before travellers leave the airport, instructions and testing kits will be provided.
