The employment rate increased by 0.4% in April

The employment rate increased by 90,000 in April, following a 0.4% change from March. The employment gains were managed by part-time employment. On a year-over-year basis, the part-time employment rate increased by 2.9%, while the full-time employment rate increased by 1.7% in April. Employment increased in industries such as professional, scientific, and technical services, accommodation and food services, health care and social assistance, and natural resources. Average salaries reached $35 per hour in April.

Employment increases in a few industries

In April, employment increases in a few service-producing industries, such as:

  • Professional
  • Scientific and technical services
  • Accommodation and food services
  • Health care and social assistance
  • Natural resources

In the past 12 months, the highest employment growth has been seen among people working in hospitals, social assistance, and nursing and residential care facilities.
