Canada to expand processing capacity for expediting family reunion

With the aim of increasing application processing capacity and reuniting families faster, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada [IRCC] is “expanding its Case Processing Centre in Sydney, Nova Scotia”.

The announcement in this regard came in the form of an official Media Release by IRCC.

The expansion will include the hiring of 62 new employees as well as the addition of new office space. The additional staff and new space will be mainly dedicated to family class overseas applications.

By “family class overseas applications” is implied Outland Spousal and Common-Law Partner Sponsorship for Canada.

Outland sponsorship allows Canadian permanent residents and the citizens of Canada to sponsor their spouse or common-law partner for Canada PR, irrespective of where the sponsored person might be residing in the world.

Before an individual can be successfully sponsored, both the sponsor as well as the person being sponsored will be required to meet certain eligibility criteria.

Founded in 1785, Sydney served as the capital of Cape Breton Island until the year 1820 when the island came to be united with Nova Scotia.   A former city, Sydney is now a part of Cape Breton regional municipality, northeastern Nova Scotia, Canada.

With the “added resources”, IRCC aims at processing more applications as well as shortening the processing times extended during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Currently, owing to the coronavirus-related restrictions, the Case Processing Centre is Sydney is limited to 30% occupancy.

With the opening of the new office space, IRCC plans on significantly increasing this capacity, allowing more employees – that are working remotely as of now – to return to the office.

According to Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Marco E. L. Mendicino, “Expanding the Case Processing Center in Sydney will help us reunite families and process more applications, while creating good local jobs for Cape Bretoners.”
