Recent reports by Statistics Canada have revealed an increase in payroll employment in certain Canadian industrial sectors. Payroll employment refers to the number of employees enjoying benefits and pay from their employer. An increase of 0.5% in payroll employment was reported consecutively from January to March 2024.
The healthcare and social assistance sectors have reported the highest number of job vacancies in Canada. Labour demand in these sectors increased by 0.5% as of April 2024. Job vacancies are also noticed in management-related roles for companies and enterprises.

The healthcare and social assistance sector reported an increment of 0.2% (5,700) in payroll employment. An upward trend has been noticed in these sectors since September 2022, resulting in a cumulative gain of 149,600 or 6.7% over this duration. There was an increase of 2.9% in the total labour demand in healthcare and social assistance sectors.

The average weekly earnings increased by 3.7% to CAD 1240 on a year-over-year basis in April after a 4.1% surge in March 2024. A little change was noticed in the average weekly earnings on a monthly basis as of April 2024. Average weekly hours remain unchanged at 33.5 hours in April, but it increased by 0.9% on a y-o-y basis.
