Launched in 2015, the Express Entry system is an online application management system that handles the application process for skilled immigrants that intend to take up permanent residence in Canada.
The federal Express Entry system comes under the purview of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada [IRCC].
Which programs come under the Express Entry system? | |
Federal Skilled Worker Program [FSWP] | For skilled workers that have overseas work experience and want to take up Canada PR. |
Federal Skilled Trades Program [FSTP] | For skilled workers that intend taking up Canadian permanent residence based on their being qualified in a skilled trade. |
Canadian Experience Class [CEC] | For skilled workers that want to become permanent residents in Canada and have previous, and recent, Canadian work experience. |
Additionally, the Provincial Nominee Program [PNP], commonly referred to as Canadian PNP, has various streams linked with IRCC Express Entry.
Basic step-wise process for Canada PR through IRCC Express Entry |
STEP 1: Create an IRCC Express Entry profile, by filling out an online form. |
STEP 2: Entering the IRCC Express Entry pool of candidates. |
STEP 3: IRCC draws, to be held on a regular basis. [The draw schedule is not pre-determined or announced beforehand.] |
STEP 4: Receiving an invitation to apply [ITA] by IRCC. |
STEP 5: Responding to the ITA. |
STEP 6: Submitting application for permanent residence in Canada. |
If not invited by IRCC, the individual can create a new Express Entry profile once the present one expires. An IRCC Express Entry profile will be valid for 1 year from the date of the profile creation.
As per 2021-2023 Immigration Levels Plan, 108,500 will gain permanent residence in Canada in 2021 through the federal Express Entry system.

No all-program draws were held this month.
The last all-program draw to be held by IRCC was on December 23, 2020.
All of the 4 Express Entry draws held in August 2021 were program-specific, alternatively inviting candidates eligible for the CEC and provincial nominees.
Here, we shall see all the federal draws held by Canada in August 2021.
As it is only the highest-ranked that receive invitations by IRCC, a PNP nomination [worth 600 points in itself] guarantees an ITA by IRCC in a subsequent IRCC draw to be held.
In 2020 | In 2021 | |
Invitations issued by date [August 19] | 62,450 | 105,779 |
Express Entry Draws held in July 2021 – 4
Total ITAs issued by IRCC in July 2021 – 6,975
Sl. No. | Draw No. | Date of Draw | Immigration Program | Invitations issued | CRS points cut-off |
1 | #202 | August 19, 2021 | CEC | 3,000 | CRS 403 |
2 | #201 | August 18, 2021 | PNP | 463 | CRS 751 |

For an IRCC Express Entry candidate, a PNP nomination in itself is worth 600 CRS ‘additional’ points, under the Comprehensive Ranking System [CRS] Criteria – Express Entry.
The CRS is used for ranking profiles while in the IRCC Express Entry pool of candidates.
Only the highest-ranked Express Entry candidates are invited to apply for Canadian permanent residence.
Applying for Canada PR via IRCC Express Entry is by invitation-only.
How is CRS calculated in IRCC Express Entry pool? |
A. Core / human capital factors |
B. Spouse or common-law partner factors |
C. Skill Transferability factors |
D. Additional points [Maximum 600 points] · Brother/sister living in Canada as a citizen/PR · Skills in the French language · Post-secondary education in Canada · Arranged employment · PNP nomination |
CRS score of an IRCC Express Entry candidate = A + B + C + D A maximum of 1,200 points are available as per the CRS criteria. |
“Arranged employment”, that is, a valid job offer in Canada, is worth 200 CRS points. A PNP can get you 600 CRS points, the maximum points that might be secured under Additional Points.
