Highlights: Canada eases Super Visa requirements from Jan 2025

• The Canadian Government has announced changes to the Super Visa requirements.
• Applicants having a valid health insurance policy, even from outside, are eligible to apply for a Canada Super visa.
• The health Insurance policy must have at least one year validity and cover a minimum of CAD 100,000.
• The new changes are applicable from January 28, 2025.

New Requirements for Canada Super Visa

The federal government of Canada has eased health insurance requirements for Super Visa applicants. Under the updated changes, candidates having health insurance policies from non-Canadian insurers are also eligible for a Super Visa application.

Previously, applicants were required to have a health insurance policy purchased from Canadian insurers to be eligible for a Super visa. The new requirements aim to make the process of obtaining a Super Visa easier for parents and grandparents.  The new policy will be effective from January 28, 2025.

Eligibility Requirements for non-Canadian health insurance policies

A non-Canadian health insurance policy would be eligible for a Super Visa only if it adheres to the following requirements:

• The policy has authorization under the Insurance Companies Act regulated by the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI)
• The policy is listed under the OSFI List of federally regulated financial institutions
• The policy was issued during the course of its business insurance in Canada
• The policy must have a minimum validity of one year and cover an amount of CAD100,000 including healthcare, repatriation, and hospitalization
• The policy must be fully paid or in installments in deposit

Note: Candidates migrating to Canada via Super Visa must demonstrate proof of payment of a health insurance plan to the border services officer while entering the country.
