11 communities will be participating in the newly introduced Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot of Canada. Five of these communities were supposed to start the intake process on 1st January 2020. However, the launch of the Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot has been delayed by at least a month in these communities.

The five communities that were supposed to start accepting applications were:

  • North Bay, Ontario
  • Timmins, Ontario
  • West Kootenay, British Columbia
  • Vernon, British Columbia
  • Claresholm, Alberta

Additional Sudbury and Thunder Bay in Ontario have also delayed the launch of the Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot. Sudbury was supposed to start accepting applications by 1st November 2019 while Thunder Bay should have started on 2nd January. However, both these communities have delayed accepting applications for the pilot.

The Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot will most likely commence in February 2020 for Claresholm, Alberta.

The communities of North Bay and Timmins have confirmed that they are most likely to start by the pilot by the end of January.

West Kootenay in British Columbia is most likely to start accepting applications only by March this year.

Attracting foreign workers to smaller communities of Canada is the main aim of the Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot. The pilot aims to address the workforce shortage in these communities due to low birth rates, ageing population and migration of younger people to the more populated areas of the country.

The Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot has started accepting applications for the following communities:

  • Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario
  • Altona/Rhineland, Manitoba
  • Brandon, Manitoba

Moose Jaw in Saskatchewan would also be a participant in the pilot program. However, it will only start accepting applications by 1st April 2020.
