Canada continued to set a new immigration record by welcoming more than 341,000 immigrants in 2019. This is the fifth time in tis immigration history where the country has welcomed more than 300,00 immigrants in a single year.
The number of immigrants in 2019 exceeded the target Canada set for the year. The Immigration Levels plan had fixed the target at 330,800 immigrants. The actual numbers exceeded by 10,000 immigrants.
Canada stuck to its plan of welcoming 58 percent of the immigrants under the economic class, 27 percent under family sponsorship and 15 percent under the refugee class.
India is the top source for immigrants
Indians accounted for 25 percent of immigrants who came to Canada in 2019. Around 86,000 Indians got their permanent residence in 2019. Following India was China which contributed to 9 percent of immigrants followed by Philippines which accounted for 8 percent.
Top provinces that welcomed immigrants
Ontario received the maximum number of immigrants with more than 150,000 immigrants choosing to settle down here. This was followed by British Columbia that welcomed 50,000 immigrants. Alberta followed with more than 43,000 immigrants. Quebec came fourth with 40,000 immigrants followed by Manitoba with nearly 19,000 immigrants.
Cities where immigrants went
35 percent of immigrants chose to settle down in the Greater Toronto Area. Around 118,000 immigrants chose to settle in the city. This number was greater than the number of immigrants who settled in the Atlantic provinces- Quebec, Manitoba, Saskatchewan.
Toronto was followed by Vancouver, Montreal and Calgary in that order.
Canada has set a target for 360,000 immigrants for this year and is expected to exceed this target once again.
