On June 25, 2022, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced about the creation of a new task force for the evaluation of the service standards of IRCC regarding Canada airports and passport applications. At that time, the backlog of the applications was 2.4 million. People who want to migrate to Canada have to wait for the decision on their applications for Canada PR.
IRCC told that the number of applications has increased after the pandemic and the backlog has reached up to 2.7 million. IRCC has updated its processing time tool which will show the length of processing time of the applications.
Sean Fraser assured in June 2022 that making an investment in technology and digitization and hiring more staff will help in achieving more service standards by the end of 2022.
Service Canada has the challenge of increase in the number of applications after restrictions for the pandemic have been eased. Because of this, Canadians have to wait in long lines as there is uncertainty of the processing time. The new task force introduced several measures that are either in effect or will come into effect very soon.
These measures include opening of the four new passport pick up offices whose locations are:
The task force has also plans to open around 20 new application and pick-up centers at different locations. Minister Karina Gould has stated that these new offices will process the passports within 9 to 10 days.
The task force has also plans to enable around 300 Service Canada centers to process the applications for the passport.
