Canada has announced new caregiver pilot programs for Home Child Care Providers and the Home Support Worker Pilot approaches. The new pilot programs grant caregivers permanent resident status when they come to Canada. They will also be eligible to work for organizations that provide temporary or part-time care for semi-independent people or people recovering from an injury or illness. The existing pilot programs will expire on June 17.

According to the 2024-2026 Immigration Levels Plan, Canada plans to welcome more than 15,000 new permanent residents through caregiver pilot programs. After the pilot program launched in 2019, around 5,700 caregivers and their family members became permanent residents by April 30, 2024.
The demand for caregivers in Canada is increasing because of the growing population. Over nine million Canadians are expected to retire in the next six years, and more individuals will require additional support in their homes or institutions. Families in Canada also require a childcare provider as more women are working.
