From August 10, 2021, Australian Bureau of Statistics has made compulsory for all residents (temporary and permanent) to participate in Census. Failure in the census participation, can lead to a penalty of up to $222 per day.
Highlights:
Irrespective of the residential status, participation is mandatory. It is for those who are physically present in Australia on 10 August. If you leave Australia on 9 August, you don’t have to participate. You will have to include your child’s name if they are born on 10 August. |
Australian citizens and permanent residents who are currently residing in India or other countries are not mandated to fill the census form.
To complete the census process online, the individual needs to carry a password given in the form. Those who are unable to complete it online can post the paper-filled form in a prepaid envelope, which is given by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
The content in the form constitutes nearly about 50 questions, which includes the details such as name, age, country of birth, language spoken, occupation, disability, and other information required of the respondent.
To fill this form takes nearly 30-45 minutes. If any individual fails to fill the form, a penalty of $222 a day will be added till the individual completes and submit the form. This is according to the Census and Statistics Act 1905.
People who are facing issues to fill the form can call to 131450 to get the information and avail the services required. They can also get the information required in their language. They also declared that the data shared with ABS would be secured, and strict penalties will be imposed for breaching or leaking the data.
Personal information like name and other salary details will never be shared with government agencies, including the Australian Taxation Office and other state governments.
As per the Australian Bureau of Statistics information, it is expected to complete the whole process by September 2021, and the first draft of details collected will be published in July 2022, while the final draft is estimated to release by October 2022.
