US, Canada Visa

Did you know that a clean driving record could actually be your key to getting a long-term US, Canada Visa? Canada and the US have been asking for records of traffic violations from the home country of visa applicants.

Ludhiana Police have said that they have received five such requests from the US and Canada Embassy. The requests pertain to traffic violations of visa applicants at the Ludhiana commissionerate.

Rakesh Aggarwal, Ludhiana Police Commissioner, said that they had received five requests in the last four months. The requests are from the embassies of the US and Canada seeking traffic records of Ludhiana-based Permanent Residency Visa applicants. Mr Aggarwal had said that Ludhiana Police now have an online database; they check the traffic records online and provide the information to the Embassies.

However, immigration experts say that it is very uncommon for Embassies to seek such information from the local Police. When applying for a Visa, an applicant is asked to check the box asking them about whether they have a criminal record. Applicants who are found to have lied about their criminal record are deported by the visa-granting countries.

Immigration experts believe that traffic violation should not be a ground for visa rejection unless it had led to severe consequences like causing death etc. However, any other criminal record could be solid ground for visa rejection.

Ludhiana has one of the highest fatality rates due to traffic violations, as per The Times of India. Ludhiana has a dubious record of 68.5% fatality rate due to road accidents. Hence, Embassies may be concerned that Ludhiana residents may not follow traffic rules and may create a problem when they immigrate abroad.

International road safety expert, Kamaljit Soi, feels that the new move may force more people to follow traffic rules. People who aspire to move abroad will take greater care while following traffic rules.

A senior Police officer from Ludhiana Police has confirmed that no such requests have come from any small countries.

Earlier the Police had manual records of traffic violations which made it difficult to check. Often a NOC was issued without checking the records for a traffic violation. Embassies, hence, have now added the new parameter of checking traffic violations before issuing a visa.
