EU to create easier Schengen Visa via digitalization

Earlier, the European Union Commission used to process the applications offline. Due to the pandemic effect, the government has proposed a new step to convert and replace the offline procedure with a Digital procedure.

Now the EU countries digitalized the Schengen visa process.

Replaced and introduced a probability of submitting the visa applications online through the EU visa online platform.

Reason for Digitisation:

  • The new statement on migration purposes to fully digitalize the visa procedures by 2025. This process will reduce the burden and costs and improve the applicants' security.
  • The digitalized procedures will lead harmony to in the Schengen area and improve the application processing.
  • This digital procedure also reduces 'the-visa-shopping' by the applicants.
  • Schengen visa information reports show more security risks in the physical visa sticker prices, whereas digitizing the application process has reduced the fabrication and fraud in visa processing.
  • So, from now onwards, applying for the Schengen visa will be online with a single EU platform for paying the visa fee irrespective of the Schengen country they visit.
  • Once the application is received, the EU platform will decide on the country that inspects the visa application. This EU platform also provides some supplemental and updated information about the short-stay visas available in Schengen and the procedures, requirements, and mandatory documents to apply.
  • After the conversion to digitalization, no application needs to go to the consulates to submit any documents physically, as the complete procedures are made online. The Commission states that the applicants are required to go to the consulates only to provide biometrics if their biometric data provided before is not valid along with the travel document.
  • Apart from those mentioned above, this visa includes state-of-the-art security features, which will be safer than the previous visa sticker procedures. Moreover, the new step will ensure that the fundamental rights of the citizens will be protected.

Commissioner for Home Affairs proposal:

The Commissioner for Home Affairs, Ylva Johansson. She says that this modern digitization process is critical as many applicants think it is burdensome to apply for a Schengen visa. This step might turn out to be a betterment to improve the application processing for Schengen visas.

 "This is a modern visa process necessary to make international migrant travel to the EU easier for tourism and business. It is the high time that the EU provides a safe, fast and online-based solution for the EU visa application platform as the 102 country's nationals are always in need of short term visas to travel to the EU".

Vice-President Margaritis Schinas

Vice-President Margaritis Schinas also accredited this decision. She says this is a way of promoting our European Way of Life. She also claims that it is essential to provide Sage and secure medium for Schengen visas for everyone.

This digitalization proposal of the Schengen visa process will be discussed by the Council and Parliament soon. The EU Member States will have five years to convert to the online visa platform.
