The European Migration Network report of 2023 has revealed that there is an increase of foreign workers in Finland. In 2023, Finland issued 34,557 work-based residence permits; out of these, 15,081 were residence permits issued for the first time, and 19,476 were the permits extended. The number of work-based permits issued by the Finnish government in 2022 was 28,455 indicating an increasing number of foreign workers who are settling in Finland.

More professionals are bringing their family members to Finland

Official statistics show an increase in the number of family members receiving residence permits. In 2023, the Finland government granted 20,278 permits on the basis of family relationships.

 

Finland also reported a surge in the number of students in 2023. Around 12,795 new residence permits were issued to foreign students in 2023, 35% more than in 2022. The Finnish government received 5,372 new applications from asylum seekers.

Finland Is Facing Workforce Shortage

The European Migration Network statistics show that the number of foreign workers in Finland has increased, but the country still has a labor shortage in 33 different occupations. Some of the recognized shortage occupations were in the food service industry, IT, engineering, healthcare, construction, and metal processing.         

 

Finland still needs more foreigners to fill the most in-demand jobs.
