What is the EU Blue Card?

The EU Blue Card is a residence permit for skilled non-EU nationals willing to live and work in Germany, including other eligible EU countries. EU Blue Card holders can work and reside in any of the EU countries for up to four years.

Germany has recently updated the EU Blue Card policy to attract skilled foreign workers, especially from India. The updated policies will offer a golden opportunity for Indian tech talents, including recent graduates and IT professionals without a university degree.

Major changes to the EU Blue Card Policy in 2025

The following are the key changes introduced to the EU Blue Card program, effective from 2025:

  • Lowered Salary Requirements: The minimum salary requirement for EU Blue Card applicants will be lowered to €45,300, which is 1.5 times the average salary in Germany. The salary threshold for in-demand occupations will further be reduced to €41,041.80.

  • Extended list of eligible professions: Skilled professionals are required across various industrial sectors, and therefore, Germany has expanded the list of eligible occupations for the EU Blue Card program.

  • Recent graduates welcomed: Fresh university pass-outs, including students who have graduated in the past three years, will also be eligible for an EU Blue Card in Germany if they meet the salary requirement.

  • Opportunities for IT professionals without a degree: Skilled IT professionals with a minimum work experience of three years will be eligible to apply for an EU Blue Card without a university degree.

  • Easier application process: Germany is planning to reduce paperwork and processing times to streamline the EU Blue Card application process. This will help the foreign workers to transition to EU Blue Card from a Germany work permit.
