Highlights: Countries Retaining International Graduates

  • An OECD report found that Germany and Canada retain the most international students.
  • The two countries offer convenient post-graduate work permits for students.
  • Australia, New Zealand, Estonia, France, and Japan are the other preferred countries with high student retention.

Abstract: A report by OECD concluded that Germany and Canada are the two countries that retain most of their international graduates.

International students studying in Germany or Canada are more likely to immigrate to these two countries than any other OECD or Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development countries.

After 5 years of initial admission, over 60% of international students who were issued a study permit in 2015 are still living in Germany and Canada. The other preferable countries for international students with the same trend are Australia, New Zealand, Estonia, France, and Japan, as found by the OECD report.
